April 24, 2008 - Do you snack on cookies? Drink juice pouches? Eat energy bars? Did you know that every year BILLIONS of drink pouches and food wrappers end up in dumpsters and landfills across America?

Well,  TerraCycle has teamed up with Clif Bar,  Oreos, Capri Sun and others to reduce the amount of  packaging going into our landfills. They will donate two cents to charity for every used wrapper collected by individuals and organizations. The collected waste will be fused and woven into a strong material, which will then be used to make backpacks, gym totes and other products.

Anyone can help (that means YOU)- visit www.terracycle.net/brigades to get started! Cool, huh?

Spring is making a comeback so it’s time to get outside and do some biking! From spoke riders and reflectors to bike horns and bells, Pretty Tough checks out the must-have accessories and the coolest ways to jazz up your bicycle.

Horns & Bells
Adding a horn or bell to your bicycle is a great way to make a lot of noise and safely let other people know that you’re on the road. An old-skool bugle horn or a bell is always nice, but if you really want to let people know you’re coming through, check out the Delta Airzound Horn. At 115 decibels, it just might be the most obnoxious-sounding warning device around. And, it’s the perfect way to signal motorists or scare little ol’ men.

The Bell Bike Bell offers classic styling with a shiny, chrome-plated finish that looks great on any bike. A rubber shim allows for a custom fit and prevents scratching. If you’re looking for something a bit more stylish and not so annoying, try the Mirrycle Incredibells - easy to mount bells with a covered dome that rings loud and clear. The Candibell comes in five delicious candy colors: Pink, Blue, Green, Orange and Purple.  Listen

Locks
The one bike accessory you never want to be without (besides a helmet) is a lock. There’s nothing worse than having some punk rip off your bike cause you left it unlocked somewhere. A good lock can also be used to secure other sports equipment as well. Best to get a solid steel U-shaped one - they’re nearly impossible to cut through and can easily be mounted to the frame of your bike. Check out the  On Guard Bulldog U Lock for a popular choice.

Throw Like a GirlIf you’ve ever heard the expression “You throw like a girl,” it means your throw kinda sucks.

The “girl throw” refers to a wimpy style a lot of girls seem to have. Girls often face the target with their forearm cocked back and the ball in their upturned palm. Then they throw with just the arm (rather than the whole body). The action is usually limited to a quick extension of the forearm. Essentially, girls tend to “push” the ball rather than hurl it.

Well, before we go any further - let’s get one thing straight. Girls can throw. In fact, many girls can throw harder and faster than a lot of guys. Softball players like Jennie Finch can pitch a ball close to 90 miles per hour.

Some people think the reason for the “girl throw” is based on physical differences between guys and girls. Not. If you ask an orthopedist, an anatomist, or a coach of a women’s softball team, they’ll tell you that there is no anatomical reason why boys and girls throw differently.

Candace ParkerApril 22, 2008 - We knew Candace Parker was a superstar before her great performance in this year’s NCAA Women’s Final Four Tournament, leading the Tennessee Lady Vols to their eighth (and second consecutive) championship.

We knew the moment she started dunking rocks in high school and during college games that she was destined to shine in the WNBA. Earlier this month, she was the first overall pick in the WNBA draft, going to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Now, a week into her pro career, the endorsements are coming through. Gatorade was the first to sign Parker, who is also a member of the U.S. Olympic team,  to an endorsement deal.

“It’s only fitting for me to announce Gatorade as my first partner as I begin my professional basketball career because they have been part of my life since the day I first picked up a basketball,” said Parker. “It still means a lot to me that in high school I was honored as a two-time Gatorade High School Basketball Player of the Year and as a college athlete at the University of Tennessee, Gatorade was always on the sidelines.”

Candace has also signed an endorsement deal with adidas, who was battling with Nike to grab the budding superstar. Young girls relate to her and someday may be able to lace up a pair of Parker basketball shoes. We’re sure these deals are just the first of many so stay tuned!

April 22, 2008 - Hey, girls. Wondering how you can make a difference? Here are 10 easy things you can do to help the planet, whether it’s Earth Day or not.

1. Carpool or use public transportation for a day (or a week or a month) and try walking, skateboarding or biking instead of using a car.  Next time you have an away game, catch a ride with a friend or pick up a few of your teammates on the way.

2. Turn off the lights, the computer and the television when not in use. Spend a day outdoors instead of sitting at home playing video games, surfing the net and watching tv.

3. Try eating vegetarian at least one day a week. A meat-based diet requires seven times more land than a plant-based diet. Livestock production is responsible for more climate change gasses than all the motor vehicles in the world.

4. Choose foods produced organically, locally and in season. Support regional farmers: buying locally and in season is better for the environment than buying foods that have been shipped hundreds of miles to your local market. Stop using plastic bags.

5.  Donate your old sports equipment or resell it instead of throwing it away in the trash.  Also recycle old cell phones and digital cameras for charity.

6. Start using a water filter instead of buying cases of water. Don’t run the water while brushing your teeth. Shower faster to conserve water.  I know we all like to take long and hot showers (especially after games), but it is very wasteful. Try to shower in under five minutes.

7. Recycle Your Shoes - Just because your shoes don’t fit any more or have holes in them, doesn’t mean you should throw them in the trash. Nike has a program where you can give your shoes to any Nike store or mail them to the company’s recycling center. The materials are used to make surfaces for tennis courts, basketball courts, running tracks and playgrounds.

8. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). A CFL uses only 25% as much energy as an incandescent bulb and lasts 10 times longer.

9. The simple act of recycling has more impact on the environment than the average person thinks. As athletes, you know how much water and Gatorade you consume so try to take your own water to practice in a resuable bottle. If your drinks come in an aluminum can or plastic bottle make sure not to throw it away in the garbage, but recycle it instead.

10. This is a great opportunity to brag. Tell someone what you’re doing to make the world a better place. Support the cause. Encourage others to get involved too.

Bonus tip: If you or someone you know golfs, get biodegradable tees instead of plastic ones.

April 21, 2008 - If you’re a student-athlete, take note. It’s finally happened – videogames are now officially homework. Kaplan, the makers of all those test preparation books, has teamed with Aspyr Media to create an SAT prep game for the Nintendo DS, according to Newsweek.

The project is early in development and does not yet have a name.  If it’s a success, can we also get a DS game to help us understand the theory of relativity or the geometry of space time?

When it comes time to prep for the SATs, and your parents suddenly decide to buy you a Nintendo DS, they may well have an ulterior motive. Would you be more likely to prep for the SATs on your DS than through a book or browser?

Danica Patrick’s First VictoryApril 20, 2008 - Move over boys! Danica Patrick scored her long-awaited first IndyCar series victory and became the first female winner in IndyCar history by taking the Japan 300 on Sunday. Danica finished 5.8594 seconds ahead of pole-sitter Helio “Twinkle Toes” Castroneves on the 1.5-mile Twin Ring Motegi oval.

“It’s a long time coming. Finally,” Danica said tearfully. “It was a fuel strategy race, but my team called it perfectly for me. I knew I was on the same strategy as Helio and when I passed him for the lead, I couldn’t believe it. This is fabulous.”

The 26-year-old Danica won in her 50th career IndyCar start, taking the lead from Castroneves on the 198th lap in the 200-lap race. Danica, who started from the third row and made her final pit stop on lap 148, stayed close to the leaders throughout the race.

The champagne on the winner’s podium must have tasted even sweeter for Danica, given recent rule changes in the Indy Racing League. With some drivers complaining her petite stature gave her an advantage–lighter cars can be quicker and use less fuel; the IRL amended its rules so that the minimum weight for the car must now include the driver. Many thought Danica’s hopes of winning a race had disappeared forever. But Danica proved the doubters wrong, doing an awesome job of conserving fuel for when it really mattered.

Her victory represents a zenith that the sport has been unable to reach for quite some time and hopefully it won’t be too long before she notches another top podium finish. This is exactly what the IRL has been waiting for since Danica exploded into the mainstream at Indy in 2005.

Her tears increased when she met up with her parents and husband as she got out of the car. “That was clearly girlie of me,” she said with a smile.

With Danica finally able to put one in the win column, she has run OVER the monkey that was on her back.   One thing is for sure: she won’t have to answer those pesky questions about if she’s ever going to win anymore.  Well done Danica, well done!!
